A college class on detective fiction had me read this, I believe, some many years ago, and I recall it being the one disappointment from the book list. On the bright side, that has rendered me more susceptible to forgetting the plot, and thus I have been able to read it over anew- and I liked it this time! I still didn’t totally get it- I feel like one needs to know more about Chile and read very closely to get exactly what’s happening- but the basic premise I understood and found interesting this time. Still not my favorite, still purposefully obtuse, but it definitely works to create a strong mood- that’s what works here, the mood. As to what message is actually played for I’m not sure, but for a 150 page little country/character study it’s certainly something.
Peeping Tom goes wild. Altamente tentada a dar 5 estrelas para esse livro, mas ele ainda há de passar pela degustação do tempo para que assim o faça.
Might be my favorite novella of all time. A mighty masterpiece.

“La vida seguía. Era necesario hacer cosas (las que fuera, cambiar de puesto un florero cinco veces en media hora, para no volverse loca) y encontrar el lado positivo de cada situación, es decir, afrontar las situaciones una por una y no todas al mismo tiempo como tenía por costumbre hasta entonces. Y madurar”.
Roberto Bolano is fast becoming one of my favourite writers despite the fact that all three of the books I've read by him I've only given 4 stars. They're not quite perfect, but they're intensely readable and I know I'll read all of them again.
The beginning of this book really reminded me of The Savage Detectives, which was fantastic, and I really liked the last chapter and the character of Romero. It won't be long until I read another book by Roberto Bolano.
