I really enjoy this introduction to the world of Alera. Is it perfect? No. Is it worth reading if you love fantasy? Yes.

These quickie reviews are so much fun to write, so let's continue on that track, huh?
_______________
Furies of Calderon is a fantastic first installment. I've been on a bit of a fantasy kick lately and this managed to satisfy that need.
Don't be intimidated by its size or genre; The 600+ pages fly by and feel more like 200. The concept of Furies is a very interesting one that creates endless possibilities for the next few books.
You quickly become attached to the characters, and although there are many of them, it never gets confusing or hard to remember who is who. Isana is my personal favorite, that woman is a badass bitch who won't take any shit from sexist men!

This book balances on a tightrope between young adult and adult. There's a good amount of violence and only one character who is considered a teenager, and he is only a medium-sized part of the story. I'm looking forward to seeing Tavi grow as a character, and can't wait to see what's next to come of him.

The reason why it isn't a full-on 5 stars is because the ending was dragged out way too long (200 pages). And yet, after I finished it, I found myself wanting more.

Final verdict:
I am on this bandwagon and am not planning on getting off any time soon. Hand me the next book!

I'm enjoying this story. Characters are afraid when it's appropriate instead of being ridiculously courageous. It's fluff and that's what I wanted.

So I really got interested in this book when I heard how Jim Butcher got the idea for the story. I've listened to other books by him as well and I thought that it would be a good story. Boy was I wrong!

This book and I'm sure the rest of the series is and will be ranked among my top favorites books! Seriously! There was enough characters to keep things interesting rather than cluttered with too many to keep track of or bored following one character. Also the action was great! The description was enough to paint a vivid picture but not overly descriptive to drag it out or be overly disgusting or graphic.

For real, if you like fantasy and magic novels give this one a read. AMAZING!

I tried listening to this on audiobook, and while I was enjoying it for the most part. I fell asleep while listening to it and honestly can't remember where I was. So, for now, I'm going to put this down and pick it back up again at a later date.
