DNF @ 41%.
A bit to elder-millennial-trying-to-be-coon vibe from the FMC, and it’s cringe. No chemistry between the leads. The plot and adventure/espionage is not enticing or interesting. It gets weirdly too into details on some random things and then too vague in others.

Oh my gosh, this gave me the early 2000s Covert Affairs TV show. I absolutely loved Dove and Mendez.
I think this was a wildly refreshing spin on right place wrong time. Dove being a hacker who hated being out in public was just the right amount of holy crap that's me. Dove deciding that she was going to follow through with what was happening really spoke to me too.
This was 100% an Action-Romance. I was not disappointed by the lack of romance, but this was for sure a slow burn and that worked here. The build up between them and all of the ebbs and flows of the "mission" kept me turning the pages.
More than anything I loved that one of the characters had a hearing aid and was not just there with hearing loss for the diversity. I love that he was just as useful to them as a hearing person. I also found that when he lost his hearing aids it felt very realistic and relatable. 10/10 cannot wait for more from this series (the author confirmed on my insta when I was freaking out for more!)

Reader’s Notes:
– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Dove’s point of view
– there is innuendo & suggestive remarks
– there is some violence & death
– there are passionate make-outs & touches on a person’s back, under their shirt
– Dove strips to her underwear once in the story to prove that she didn’t have a bug/tracker planted on her rather than having another character (guy) put their hands on her (though they are both interested in each other which is shown by his facial expression/words before she leaves the room)
Review:
I removed a star mainly due to the innuendos & stripping scene. I wasn’t really a fan of either of them. The make-outs were also a bit borderline for me, but not too bad.
However, I enjoyed the rest of the story! I loved that there was no cursing (except saying stuff like a character cursed under their breath; no actual curse words on page). I loved that by only having Dove’s point of view for the story’s events, Mendez was such a mystery. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out with Dove if he could/should be trusted. I also loved that Dove’s point of view narrowed my knowledge of the other aspects of the storyline so that I just had to follow along with her. I loved the spy-life actions mixed in with the tension & romance brewing between Dove and Mendez. And I loved that there were some sweeter moments between the two of them as well!
Summary:
Dove is a white hat hacker who likes testing company’s systems for vulnerabilities and passing that information on to them so they can update as needed. With her job keeping her close to home and her sister’s job having her go all over the world, Dove rarely sees her & jumps at the chance to spend time with her when it comes. But this time, her sister doesn’t show up and Dove is thrown into a situation that she can’t get out of. All because some people thought she was her sister & insisted that she was a spy. Now, she’s on the run with a guy who claims to be her sister’s spy partner. Mendez claims that he wants the same thing Dove does: to clear her sister’s name and make it safe for her to come out of hiding. But some unexpected evidence points to Mendez not telling Dove the whole truth…

The Spy and I by Tiana Smith is a thrilling spy romance where a case of mistake identity upends the quiet life of a hacker that just so happens to be a twin sister. I love a good romance that has action, adventure & suspense all rolled up into one incredible story & The Spy and I is such a fun read.
This is book #1 in the My Spy series & I am so excited to keep reading it!
The Spy and I is great of fans of…
🖤 Romantic Suspense
🖤 Hacker Meets Spy
🖤 Forced Proximity
🖤 Mistaken Identity
Romance plus mystery is the best combination & when you add in spies, it is the best surprise. Forced proximity with the premise of questionable loyalty, an intense connection along with simmering chemistry sets up a captivating novel. I really enjoyed the main characters & I am so curious to see what the author has in store next.
If you’re looking for a romance with a license to thrill, I highly recommend reading The Spy & I.
Massive thanks to NetGalley & Berkley Publishing for the gifted copy, which I voluntarily read & reviewed.
