Wayyyy less romance than I thought there would be. It was more espionage book with a side of romance but it was still a super fun read. The chemistry between them is definitely undeniable and I will 100% be reaching for the next book.

This story reads like a fanfiction of some spy adventure where the main characters are replaced with horny young adults acting like teenagers who cosplay and larp spies.
The insta-lusty relationship of the FMC Dove and love interest Mendez reads as exaggeratedly intense, making it seem completely fake. The spy aspect of the plot fabricates new leads and possible startegies out of thin air, and the most thought is put into Dove sinking into lust-filled thoughts about Mendez almost every time she's in mortal danger and should keep her head in the game (and a good deal of times out of danger as well). This ratio of plot to lusting gets a liiittle better in the final third of the book, but at that point it has been a total cringefest for the airheaded lusty main character, and I didn't care anymore.

The main character Dove seems so naive, childish, and self-centered that she reads more like a teenager than a 27-year-old grown woman. This is mostly due to her immediately falling into insta-lusty infatuation when she comes across a handsome face with light flirtation aimed at her, and thinks that is grounds for an everlasting relationship. Nevermind that the flirtatious man is soon revealed to be just an act for an undercover agent Mendez – who keeps the flirtation going even after the cover is blown. Besides lusting after the man, Dove seems to only be able to focus on her coding work.
Dove also has some past trauma from childhood in foster care, that she periodically reminisces, but it doesn't add any value to the plot or her scatterminded thoughts.
It doesn't help that the love interest Mendez, who is supposed to be a great special field agent for CIA (a spy, as Dove insists), says that for Dove, he is ready to switch his attitude from not doing commitment in relationships as well as largely overlook his orders from his superiors after knowing Dove just one day . That doesn't read as a beliavable character for an experienced agent.

A light, yet mostly entertaining, spy story. There could have been better character development and, although I don’t usually mind some elements of insta-love, this was a bit too instant for me. For a spy-themed rom com, it was fairly light on action and tension. Not sure I will listen to/read the second book.

initial review thoughts:
was a little overly cheesy. very much insta-love. i did like the spy moments but it kind of wrapped up too quickly. to be expected it wraps up in a neat bow.
