Shocking

This book tells the tales of human beings. Oh how interesting they are. Tears and laughter, that's the sign of a great book.

"People do what they have to in this life. We try to get from one end of it to the other with dignity and with honor. We do the best we can."

Beautiful book.

I read this book because I am teaching it, but it was surprisingly interesting and engaging. The ending is sad and says a lot about what the author thinks about the immigrant experience. It doesn’t all have to be sad :(

"People do what they have to in this life. We try to get from one end of it to the other with dignity and with honour. We do the best we can."

You will never fully know what people are trying to overcome. It’s hard to make it in the world as is, even harder in a place that makes you feel less than who you are. But at the end of it all, "they might realize that we're not that bad, maybe even that we're a lot like them. And who would they hate then?"

The Book of Unknown Americans is a story that leaves you with hope.

The Book of Unknown Americans weaves together beautiful and heartbreaking untold stories of Latino American immigrants, their struggles to balance their home culture and learn about America in the pursuit of a better life while being discouraged to do so.
