Reread 8/23. Still five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I picked this book up upon the October reads recommendation of a Booktuber. If you enjoy plot heavy books with a heavy emphasis on atmosphere, this is the book for you. This was the perfect cozy winter read. Since snow is not likely, I submersed myself in the scenery and setting.

From the start, this whodunnit had me sizing up the hotel's guests as the thief or thieves at hand. The book provided both clues and red herrings, not to mention multiple thieveries. Maybe I was thoroughly wrapped up in the adventure of the story but I did not see the twist coming.

I would rate this book 3.5 stars, mostly because when compared to a similar type middle grade story, I really preferred the Mysterious Benedict Society books to this book.

A good story, but not amazing. I read it for Christmas, which I think was a good choice — it is a Christmas season story (by virtue of taking place at Christmas).

I picked up this book because it is said to be similar to _The Westing Game_ (a favorite), and I can see the resemblance. I was a little suprised to learn in the Afterword that the author intentionally featured an adopted child as the protagonist because I don't think that aspect was integral to the story. Perhaps that was the point? In any case, my favorite feature of the book was the inclusion of short stories from a book called _The Raconteur's Commonplace Book_. Milford wrote a book by that name, so I'll read that one soon.
