I really enjoyed this story and the characters. It was heart-wrenching and heart-warming at the same time. The premise was unique and the writing was done very well.

I loved this. Perry is such an endearing narrator and you find yourself rooting for him and his friends so hard. I liked that the "villain" wasn't fully a villain, you could understand his (incredibly frustrating) actions. I loved all the different arcs and if I had one complaint it would be that I wanted more time with Perry before he's pulled from Blue River.
Something I am learning now that I am back from university for the summer and can spend a lot of times reading books with my little brother is that stereotypes abound in middle grade fiction. I guess that there's probably a reason for that--like that children in that age range think in black and white and they learn about the world through more basic, stereotyped representations. Idk. I'm really not a huge fan of it, but I guess it works for middle schoolers?
This book, man. It’s amazing the topics that middle grade authors tackle with such heart. Prison reform is necessary and important. The story of Perry shows that criminals are more than just their crimes.
This was great! I think it did a wonderful job showing ways that adults engage with children. I got into this book quickly and wanted to read it without stopping. Read it!
Leslie Connor writes beautiful stories that speak not just to a middle grade audience, but to adults who love a heartwarming tale
Such a good book. I loved Perry so much, and had very strong feelings about Mr. Van Leer. I suppose he meant well, and I can sort of see his point. I thought Connor did an excellent job of creating complex characters, and I very much enjoyed reading from both Perry and his mother's perspective.
4.5
Loved. This.
Loved Perry, loved his mom, loved Zoe, loved her mom, loved Ed, loved EVERYONE. The characters and relationships created in this story are phenomenal. "All Rise" has so much heart and beauty. Incoherent love.
I do wish the DA had been a little less... villainy, and a little more shades of gray. I think the author tried to get that in in some bits, but it could have been fleshed out. That said, I liked how things ended with him.
I also loved the chapters from Perry's mom's POV. I really appreciated that the author didn't shy away from putting in an adult's perspective, and respected kids' intelligence enough to know that they can perceive multiple layers to something.
