An engaging story told simply. Until the end, when it gets extremely emotional.
"You asked me something, didn't you? Oh, yes. Am I happy? I don't know. But if I cannot see who I am beyond the eyes of the children I bore, then... it was not worth the journey, and I might as well have not bothered at all. Hold on to yourself, even if at times you have to let go some... but not all! A little piece inside has to remain yours always; it's your right, you know."

It’s a coming of age story of a young woman in Spanish Harlem. Nilda is naive but likable. I think I would have gotten more out of this book has I read it when I was much younger!

Although this book wasn't the best technically, it was very thought provoking. It left me thinking about a range of things, from death to being a mother. I was also connected to the characters emotionally, I cared about what happened to them and what was going on (but I will admit that it was more towards the end that I realized this).
