Pretty great and unique book with plenty of interesting characters, unusual world-building, some hilarious episodes and a great potential for the sequel. What I didn't like was the ending - it could have been better. Definitely great read for fans of paranormal genre.

A good friend read and reviewed this book, and her review really made me want to go and read it. I was lucky enough to be given an ARC of the book from the publishers in exchange for an honest review.

I was glad I did. I have a thing for a good series with a paranormal storyline. This is the first book in the Evermore series and boy does it start off with a doozy. I was instantly gripped and had to force myself to put it down to do mum stuff.

The world that dawn has created was so believable, I often found myself wondering if the were mysticals really living down the road. The way she she has completely woven the history of the mysticals, including all the different factions, their kings, and how each 'race' operates within their own faction. It was extremely authentic and the way this was woven into the story made the world come to life the more I read.

The characters were well rounded and realistic. They weren't perfect and all knowing which gets annoying after a while. Each of them had flaws and insecurities, in particular Lily. She's the perfect lead character for this story as she's a strong shifter even though she's seen by many as not quite right. Shorter than a regular mystic and without the extra strength many of them have. Also, having been raised in the world of the commoners (humans), she's already different. Couple that with the discoveries she makes as the story moves on, it's any wonder she's able to deal with all she faces without completely losing it.

The other characters are just as well written, and the dynamic between them is fantastic. After an instance of excruciating tragedy, our 4 mains manage to band together in a way that the Mysticals have never seen before. The banter and humour that passes between them honestly made me laugh out loud at times, which is quite rare. In particular, Jack. He's an average teen 'sowing his wild oats', and struggles to deal with the fallout he often creates. Couple that with Ezra's 'shenanigans' with members of the opposite sex, it's any wonder that Lily and Pearl, the 4th in our motley crew, are able to look them in the eye without laughing constantly. Considering the many dark aspects of the story, it amazing that the 4 of them don't merely succumb to the horrors they see and experience.

Couple the characters with a fast paced plot, King Hall is literally unputdownable. You HAVE to keep reading to find out how our heroes and their friends, family, and the rest of their factions aqre going to deal with the latest tragedy and set back.

The only criticism I have is the complete and utter cliffhanger we are left with. In times like this, I wish the rest of the series was already available so I could have dived right in, but unfortunately, it's slated for a 1 Januray 2014 release date. I don't think I'll be able to cope with such a long wait. (See, not a true criticism).

Definitely a must read!

I purchased the second book to this series when I purchased the first book, but after reading King Hall back in 2019 I didn’t want to read the 2nd one. So when I tried to pick up the 2nd one from my Kindle account (I don’t like to waste money), I was confused about what was going on. I decided to reread King Hall to see if it was really as bad as I remembered it.

I was pleasantly surprised by my second reading of this book. It was a heck of a lot better than the first time I read it. So much so, that I bumped the original rating from 2/5 stars to 4/5 stars. I still wish that Ezra and Lily would get together already. Their relationship is moving SO SLOW!

I will be reading King Cave next.

I am sad to give this book 2/5 stars. King Hall has an interesting story, but I felt like it jumped into the world without giving enough background material. There were a few times that I checked to make sure this book wasn’t the sequel to another book. Like three or four times... That’s not good... I loved the characters (especially Ezra), but this book definitely lacked romance. The main love interest (which I presume is Ezra) was in the friend zone the WHOLE time without major development of even hinting at a relationship.

Overall, King Hall has a pretty good plot and a cool world, but the execution and delivery of the material and the lack of a romance/relationship leaves me wishing for a whole lot more.

King Hall came with a very high recommendation so I couldn’t wait to get started. I’m a fan of paranormal so being able to find something good, since there’s so much out there, was a lot of fun. Lily knows only one thing, how to survive and how to hide. When life takes a turn that throws her directly in the path of the spotlight, she has to grow up quick and learn who to trust with the secrets she’s kept all her life. I thought there was a great emotional pull to this story. Lily really draws the reader in, letting you feel the joy, pain and anger as she experiences it. I did feel like some experiences could have used a little more explanation, a little more detail in to the world built by Scarlett Dawn. Without any spoilers I did have an issue with something that happened in the very last chapter but I’m hoping that Ms. Dawn has a happy resolution in the next book. There is a cliff hanger at the end of book one so be prepared with book two in hand because you will want to jump right in.

"Well? Have I done the impossible? Rendered the two of you mute?"
His mouth opened wide in mock sock when we stayed quiet.
"Oh, I do believe I deserve a cookie. I've made the impossible, miraculously, possible. This is assuredly a monumental day. Perhaps hell has frozen over. Or, maybe," he glanced up at the blue sky, "pigs have taken flight."
He clapped his hands once, smiling at us.
"This would be the perfect occasion to use my new camera phone and take your picture together."
His smile widened.
"I'd tittle the photo: Up Shit Creek Without a Paddle."

Were there flaws? Suuure.. But I had fun reading this so I don't care :D
