The book certainly shines in it's character descriptions and emotional scenes. Although the story is adapted for a modern audience, the descriptions of the very young characters in the beginning of the book were quiet off-putting.

My thoughts ๐Ÿ’ญ: Here we have another book I picked up partly because of #RainbowCrateBookBox. I don't always enjoy retellings of Greek myths (I'm not sure why, since I love Greek mythology), but I really enjoyed this one. I liked the characters and narration throughout. This book also wins in a category it invented: most romantic, sweet, passionate, lyrical, and surprisingly non-explicit sex scene.

๐Ÿ“š The gist ๐Ÿ“š: When Patroclus is exiled by his father, Achilles claims him as his companion. Their lives become deeply intertwined as they battle destiny (and Trojans)

๐Ÿ“’Representation๐Ÿ“’: mlm mc, Greek mythology and characters

๐Ÿ’• For readers looking for ๐Ÿ’•: adaptations of Greek mythology, compelling character dynamics, outsmarting gods, a developing relationship that feels earned, war

Madeline Miller's writing is so beautiful, poetic, and profound. I loved the progression of Achilles' and Patroclus's relationship and how palpable their love felt. It was heart-breaking, devastating, and pure all in one.

The way it is written is also very engaging and easy to follow, so even if you're not into Greek mythology, you can enjoy it! Yet, it also follows closely enough to the original myths that even experts can appreciate it.

Such an easy 5 stars! It is definitely a book that I will be re-reading.

I loved this book and I had low expectations to be honest. I grew up living the Iliad and have a lot of feeling about Patroclus and Achilles as a queer boy. This story struck so many important chords for me and was very healing though often painful. I wish the book felt more self-aware about the racialized elements and racism.
