The opening issue - what if yesterday's X-men met today's x-men is excellent

And then very little happens for the rest of the book.

Overall disappointing as a standalone book.

Great book, great setup for a new storyline. Really driven by interactions between the characters, all of which are believable and fun (and only sometimes devolve into physical fights, in a nice contrast with AvX). I also really enjoyed the fallout of bringing Jean to the future - and the excellent decision to
depower Magneto considerably!
The art style is fun and pleasant throughout. Just an all round great read which leaves me wanting to know what happens next.

I liked the idea of bringing the first ones from past to the future.

This was so good!!! I cannot express how much I loved this! The artwork was amazing, the story was amazing, but the best thing was it the nostalgia. I grew up reading the x men from a very young age and just recently decided to look into the more recent publications. The plot was so reminiscent of the original x men back in the 60s. And I loved how these issues handled jean gray! Jean has always been my favorite x men and evidently my favorite superhero! Her storyline was by far the most intriguing and developed (it may also help that she’s the host of the Phoenix force). I absolutely love her as a character in this series. I can’t wait to get my hands on vol. 2!

It's a kind of slow start but there is definitely great potential in this book.

This book was all over the place. I had a hard time following the timeline for the first few issues and the dialogue was extremely repetitive.

The time travel idea is a neat one but I'm not convinced it can be pulled off here without leaving a ton of plot holes in its wake.

Be warned there is a lot of Cyclops in this book. Two versions of him in fact. And he is just as insufferable as always. As is Emma Frost. The end of this books tells me the story splits into two - All New XMen following the originals in the present day and Uncanny Xmen following the new Scott Summers and friends. Given what I've read in this book there is no way I'll be picking up Uncanny. Those characters don't interest me in the slightest.

The art is the one strong point of this collection. It's very detailed and the colours really pop. I particularly liked the spread after Jean reads Hank's mind.

I will start this review by saying that if you are starting to read X-Men comics here (which is what I did), then I think you have to watch the movies first. You will be very confused if you just jump into this world with this comic.

Saying that, I have seen all the movies, so I really, really enjoyed it. I was confused at parts, but I attribute that to how massive this universe is. I don't think I will ever know everything about X-Men. The artwork was not my favorite in the first three issues, but the last two issues were far more impressive (If you have read this, can we please talk about that gorgeous two page spread of Jean in the last issue?), and the content got better as the story progressed as well. I am definitely going to continue on with this series. Highly recommend to any fan of the X-Men movies.
