This book was unique! It is dystopian America, but unlike any other story written. There was plenty of action, and even a little twist at the end. The characters, particularly Violet and Viggo, were likeable, and I can't wait to read book 2 to see what happens next.

What the actual fuck did I just listen to. How do I get those minutes back so I can forget I ever listened to this??? Please do yourselves a favour and skip over this one. Why did I do this to myself??????????

I was drawn to this book by the concept of a society divided by gender. In the gender game two societies are divided by a river. To the West, Patrus a male-dominated society, where women are not educated, are treated as male possessions and cannot leave the house without being accompanied by their husband or a male chaperone. To the East is Matrus, a female-dominated society, where male children are screened at 8 for signs of aggression, men are given few freedoms and many women conceive by artificial insemination. In this society we find Violet, an orphan who has spent most of her teenage years working in a juvenile detention facility.
I expected Violet to a strong, self assured character because she comes from a female dominated society. Instead I found violet’s character slightly contradictory, she has a violet temper, yet she never gets angry about any of the situations she is put into, particularly how she is treated in Patrus. I wanted her to channel her anger rather than let it overwhelm her. I wanted her to make smart decisions and to look beyond the surface to reveal Lee’s true intentions. I also wanted her to acknowledge that the reason she finds Viggo attractive is because they are an equal match. There is no discussion in this book of men and women being equals and Violet never once considers it. I think this may have been the author’s intention, but I found this grating as I was hoping that it would explore these themes more. I also wanted more background on why this is a divided society. All in all I found the gender game disappointing and will probably not follow Violet’s story in the next book; The gender secret.
Good read
I glanced at the reviews for this book. SO many people did not like it. They criticized Violet’s character. I actually found it rather intriguing. As soon as it was finished I bought all 6 of the other books. It’s a little slow paced, the reason for the 4 stars, but it’s fresh and different than anything else I’ve read. I can’t wait to read to rest. I’m hoping for a Violet/Viggo reunion.

I'm not going to sugar coat it. This is a poorly written book. It's cliche, and she often takes the "easy' way out on a lot of things. And yet, I listened/read it in two days, because after all all the cheesiness etc. I was still enthralled.
Then again, I did also read the entire twilight series, so I don't always fall for fine literature. Will I read the entire series? Meeeh. probably not.

I’m always searching for a ya dystopian novel that’s as good as the hunger games, and this so far isn’t. But I’ll read the sequel and see how things progress. It’s an interesting world the author has created. Let’s see what she does with it.

I started this book months ago, and put it down after the first hundred pages or so. The exposition and rising action seemed to carry on forever, but once the story picked up, it took off. In developing relationships and trust, there is always the possibility of being stabbed in the back. Characters can turn at any moment, even from those you would never expect. Toward the end of the book an event occurred that I never expected, and my students laughed as I gasped and sat breathless. Leaning forward in my seat and holding my breath as I tried to figure out what was going on. This is a book that you need to have endurance to read, but it is quite enjoyable if you can stick it out. I will definitely be getting the next book, The Gender Secret, as there were a lot of unanswered questions in the last chapter.
