woah, just woah to the whole thing xD Forrest did it again, took a story we feel like we have heard before but made it her own.
The complete lack of LGBT characters or references really bugged me. Seriously, you're telling me that there aren't any lesbians in a world run by women, where they actively try and produce female offspring? Bullsh*t.
I did enjoy this book. I found it really slow to start off with and I felt like the story line took ages to happen, however I like the premise of the book and the characters and the middle-end of the book was a lot more fast paced and interesting. I will read the next book and decide if I want to carry on with the series!
I've read about 10% of this book and it is already awful! Violet is aggressive and angry but it is her brother who was 'marked' as aggressive and taken away. If they are giving the men a psych test, why not the women? The whole f-ing premise of the book is what a complete misogynist views what feminism would be like. Really? I mean, really?
The point that bugged me the most... Violet is shown to not have food often however, when she is given the option to eat she, predictably, "picks at it". I don't really care what the author was thinking when she started this book but it is the biggest misogynistic drivel I've seen in less than 100 pages.
NOPE!

The binary gender set up of this book is definitely problematic in a 2023 world, but I was in the mood for dystopian teen fiction, so here we are. Not one of the best of the genre. Predictable twists and not the best writing, but I’m curious where it is going next so I might read more.
Absolutely loved it! Characters were great, can't wait to read the next book to answer some of the questions I have from this book!
Its very similar in respect to like The Hunger Games and Divergent etc and I love them types of books so I'm really glad I came across this one. Now let's hope a film comes to match them!

Prologue
- wow this really pulled me in. I just read another series where the main character was Violet. We don't know what happened to Cad since it just says he fell into the water. Tim is a marked boy whatever that means. He was the only boy mentioned on her side of the river.
Chapter 1
- I had looked at the map ahead of time and was hoping the women's side wouldn't be as simple as the Matrus side... Sadly I am wrong. Hmm so Tim is a slave. If they have insubordination, you'd think making all of those people be slaves would be dumb. Okay why would her aunt, uncle, and cousin cad live on the other side?
Chapter 2
- Well this note app is dumb bc I wrote stuff for this chapter and now I see that it is gone. I mentioned something about isn't she supposed to be executed if she gets into another fight? It seems foolish that she has decided to put Dina in her place.
Chapter 3
- yep. She has killed Dina.
Chapter 4
- the royals want her for some type of mission. How much do you want to bet that the mission will compromise her morals?
Chapter 5
- I'm guessing the specimen is going to be bad news. I did not expect that she would be getting married so that's an interesting twist. Hopefully it doesn't become an undying love situation.
Chapter 6
- The green sounds like a place the city has created to keep all their people captive. I am also certain she did see a person there. I am surprised she feels proficient with just 3 days of training with weapons.
Chapter 7
- Again this stupid app erased my words. The queen showed up. I doubt they will let her see Tim. I think her mission will be extended or a failed attempt on her life will occur. I can't imagine the queen allowing her to live.
Chapter 8
- The Patrus world sounds like our own. I am sure the author meant to do that. He seems nice which is what I figured might happen. I've been ignoring the romance side but I think it is inevitable.
Chapter 9
- Hmm maybe this love affair will actually be with Viggo Croft. That would be a rather interesting twist. Especially since he is a criminal just like her. I'll be curious to see how their meeting goes. I'm surprised she submits and doesn't demand more information.
Chapter 10
- everything is nicer on this side of the world. Pretty woman scene. Officially married.
Chapter 11
- I think Lee might have his own agenda in everything but I am not sure. Viggo is the first person she meets, something will definitely happen there. I can't tell how they are going to steal the egg back without detection. I feel like he could have definitely declined the dinner invite. I feel like climbing out the window was an extreme reaction. Also of course it was Viggo who saved her and now he knows she isn't as submissive as she seems.
Chapter 12
- Guys snatch even married women. Wow and he couldn't think of a reason not to go to this restruarant?? She doesn't want to show her stubbornness to Lee which is probably smart. Why would the plan need to suddenly need to change? Weeks - I could have told you that even though supposedly everything was time sensitive. Damn they are going to kill people. Ah that's why it might have needed to change. They are going to frame Viggo Croft.
Chapter 13
- she is connecting lines between herself and Viggo. Ah he was married. Did I miss how old he was? She accidently killed someone in self defense just like Violet. Do you think Viggo is going to get protective of her!?!? He's a professional cage fighter. I just knew she was going to have to get close to Viggo. Do you think they specifically picked someone that Viggo would want??
Chapter 14
- Drop her off!? As a woman?? Ah she will dress like a man. I feel like it is impossible to change your vocal cords like that. Isn't it based on how long they are? She also has a body suit. I wonder when that will come to play. Lee feels uneasy but I doubt it is because he isn't violent. I'm surprised Alastair would contact them just over the phone. He wanted to make sure Lee hadn't lost her? Does that mean Alastair doesn't trust Lee?? Maybe some women have more freedom than others based on who their partner is.
Chapter 15
- she removed herself from choice. I bet that will change. She wants to be a fighter.
Chapter 16
- Ooo I like her in the cage. Also won't it be obvious that her knuckles are sore? Viggo is such a good guy. I don't want him framed.

A pretty tired knockoff of the "strong girl becomes heroic warrior" trope. Neither the story nor the characters had any substance to speak of, the plot was so formulaic I saw the "twist" coming from the first third of the book, and the writing was flat and trite. It's like someone took all the best parts of Hunger Games, removed them, and packaged what was left into this book. Bo-ring.
I really enjoyed the different islands of Matrus and Patrus and the way in which Violet is travelling between the islands, she owes her allegiance to the kingdom of Matrus, but is a criminal whereas in Patrus, she has no care for the island, but doesn’t want to blame Viggo Croft for the crime. She meets Lee, or so she thinks. The books is a really good book and I enjoyed the story very much. The genre is a fantasy book and there are seven books in the series and I will be reading book 2 shortly - The Gender Secret, I would recommend this book to 12+ as I think it would be a good age to read this book.
Hmmm ... I saw this ad pop up on my Facebook.

"The Gender Game" is NO Hunger Games. I didn't lose any sleep over it, in fact, I really had to push to finish. It's just one of 100s of post-apocalyptic/dystopian stories out there. This "Hunger Games Forever" page seems to have been set up simply to promote this ONE book series, capitalizing on the supposed connection. Not sure if I'm impressed by their marketing strategy, or totally turned off (I think the latter). It DID get the book on my radar, and as it was free in the Kindle Lending Library, I borrowed it for my January selection.
This was just okay. I really wasn't impressed with the story, it felt very cliche. The male/female stereotypes. In Patrus, there is a pill to deepen your voice, and one in the works to suppress your emotions. It was all just a bit eye-rolling.
I never connected to the characters. I just didn't care about them at all. It was pretty obvious right from the start that there was going to be a Violet/Viggo love connection. King Maxen's name (we never really learned too much about him, but he was a character we the reader would dislike) was a little reminiscent to me of Maxon (who reader's would love) in "The Selection" series (which I would absolutely say is a Hunger Games/Bachelor mashup! Sounds totally silly but it worked, I liked it a lot) ... just having the same/similar name for a bad character when I associate with one I cared about... Names do have that effect! I'm sure author's put quite a bit of thought into character's names just for that reason.
So anyway ... 2.5 stars. Will I continue? I just didn't feel like there was really much story. I did not expect the turns at the end, and the total "end" with no resolution. And an EGG ... still no idea what is up with that, but I'm not sure I care enough to continue, even if I can snag the followups for free with my Kindle Prime.
