After reading A Shade of Vampire and falling in love with Bella's writing style I jumped straight into [b:The Gender Game|31131467|The Gender Game|Bella Forrest|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1469731405s/31131467.jpg|51750675]. I'm not typically a huge fan of dystopians, but this one absolutely blew me away. I'd say this one is my favorite dystopian book to date!
Once I started reading this book I was immediately pulled into Violet's world, which is pretty much akin to a nightmare in my opinion. She's immersed in an world full of deception, mystery and cult-like societies. I was astonished to realize that this book was 640 pages, which I didn't find out until I was over halfway finished with this one.
Imagine the United States split down the middle. One side being ruled by men and the other side ruled by women. This is the world in which Violet is born into. She's from Matrus, ruled by women. Violet is led to believe that her society is the 'right one' with the right ideals and that Patrus, a society ruled by men is the unjust and 'wrong' society.
From the get-go Violet's life is one of hardship. She has no parents and her brother, being born a male in a society ruled by women sees him as violent and too headstrong, so he's sent north to work in the coal mines as a slave. In order for Violet to have any chance of seeing her brother again she agrees to go to Patrus to complete a task for her country. Once her mission is complete she'll be able to see her brother again.
Of course things don't go as planned.
But my favorite part was:
FORBIDDEN ROMANCE...Oh MY!
Despite all of Violet's misfortunes she does discover a bit of romance while in Patrus. Violet is involved with two men, but there is NO LOVE TRIANGLE. I wish I could elaborate on this one but I don't want to spoil anything for you.
I'd recommend if...you love books that keep you guessing with mystery and a twist around every corner you'll love this one. But be prepared for the ending...WOWSERS!! (Don't worry too much, Bella writes practically as fast as the speed of light so I'm sure we'll get the next in this series soon!)
More on the genre: Since Violet is nineteen while this book takes place and there are some pretty violent scenes I'd consider this one on the upper end of the Young-Adult spectrum. Depending on how many books there will be in this series and the timeline that they follow I could see this one turning into a New Adult series down the road.

I honestly wasn't sure what I was expecting when I read this. I almost put it down after a couple chapters, but I decided to read a little further.
The story definitely picks up after chapter 5, and it tries to keep up the momentum. There were times I had trouble figuring out where Violet's mind led her to do what she does. I had trouble relating to her, although I could see how she kept her mind on seeing her brother again.
I still am having trouble undstanding Lee's motivations, the romance with Viggo (though I did enjoy him as a character) and THAT ENDING! However, I will try to read the sequel, and maybe this series will grow on me. The concept is still interesting, and I would like to find out more about the history between the two nations.

This book was really good. Even if it was a little slow in the beginning.
The Gender Game was a lot better than I was expecting it to be. Initially, due to the title and the book’s comparison to The Hunger Games in the synopsis, I was expecting a less impactful version of Suzanne Collins’ series. But I was proven wrong! I ended up flying through this book because I had to know how it ended. Here’s why:
Characters: Violet is a strong protagonist. She’s sassy and hardcore. It’s easy to root for her because she’s going through with her mission for a noble cause. Plus, she’s confident in herself and her abilities, which just made her a stronger character in my opinion.
Romance: Violet’s relationship with Viggo is passionate and well-developed. Forrest takes her time building their relationship, having them engage in meaningful conversation that helps the reader feel and understand their growing affection for one another. I actually believe that Violet and Viggo belong together, and not just because the author happened to stick them together in the text.
Overall impression: I really enjoyed reading this book! Sure, some of the plot twists were expected, but I thought the idea of two separate nations divided by gender was an interesting idea to explore. And I’m happy to report that Forrest pulls it off!

Great Read
I really loved this book. While it is a dystopian genre, I feel it is very different from any thing I have previously read. Having just said that it is reminiscent of The Hunger Games series and The Chemical Garden series. Only in the sense of government secrets and genetic manipulation. Looking forward to reading the next have ok.
