This was a fascinating collection of speculative poetry steeped in mythology and Laotian culture. I learned a bit, was inspired to research some and was overall delighted by his clever writing.

I do with there were footnotes or ready translations, but this was mitigated when I saw found the appendices including a bestiary and recommended additional reading.

There are times where I was completely lost while reading this poetry collection. It is not the fault of the author or the collection, it is simply my lack of knowledge of Laotian folklore and culture. The appendix in the back was helpful in shedding light on a lot of things, but I still felt like I was missing pieces here and there. That aside, I enjoyed these poems; their subject matter, their perspective, their cadence. On top of enjoying the poetry, I felt like I got to learn some new things. It was a pleasant experience all around.
