I had very little idea what the plot of the novel was going into it. I randomly picked it from my stash of audiobooks, not really expecting much. But the characters feel very realistic and act how I act with my own friends. The story bounces from time period and region, but they all weave together to form one overarching look at the friendships of these three women. I think this would be a great book club read, and one for discussion

Ok. [three college friends who stay friends through adulthood]

I listened to this as an audiobook. It was mildly amusing, but not what I'm used to with Lutz's writings (I really enjoyed her detective family series whose name currently escapes me). Not sure I would have kept on with it had it been in a book rather than audiobook.

Witty and hilarious, this book was one heck of a roller coaster. I was skeptical at first with the messy timeline jumping around, near impossible to follow. But when you focus less on the timeline and more on the characters, you'll come to love this book. These characters were complex and devastatingly sad at points with what they endured as a trio. But that's the reality for many so I loved how we got it straight up in this plot. Definitely read this with a clear mind because there are too many charters to keep track of at times, but they all play a significant role at some point. I think I would reread this in a few years now that I understand the premise because I know I missed a lot of good small details.

The book jumped around time wise quite a bit which made it difficult to keep events straight.

This book just hit me in the sweet spot. I enjoyed every minute spent with this fantastic novel. It is, at its essence, a character study of three women and their friendship. Kate and Anna meet when they are assigned to share a dorm room. Despite their differences, or maybe because of them, they become best friends. Anna's a daredevil, constantly pushing the envelope and coming up with new ways to have fun. Kate lives inside her own head. One night, leaving a party, they find another student passed out on the lawn, and drag her back to the dorm with them. George is an athletic outdoors person with horrible taste in boyfriends (and later husbands).

For the first several chapters, the book reads as though Lutz had thrown all of the pages into the air and reassembled the book at random, but as the story continues, the novel comes into focus like a jigsaw puzzle coming together. I appreciated how Lutz crafted this story - the three women don't always get along, but they never cease being supportive of one another.

How to start a fire by Lisa Lutz
Story of 3 women who befriend one another at college and the book follows them throughout the years.
Listening to the book is hard to follow as the years go back and forth leaving off where they left off prior but other stories also clutter the tale.
College life, drugs, marriage, divorce, infidelity and choices one makes. It all fell apart one night that changed all their lives forever....
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
