This book was full of pain, love, self-discovery, and sisterhood. All great ingredients for a good story. Rounding up to a four. I was satisfied with the ending, surprised by some of the middle, and enjoyed the novelty of the beginning.
Graphic: Death of parent, Excrement, Infidelity, Death, Mental illness, Sexual content, Sexual harassment, Slavery, Deportation, Medical content, Rape, Body shaming, Alcoholism, Abandonment, Blood, Emotional abuse, Confinement, Grief, Infertility, and Pregnancy

Elizabeth Acevedo is one of my favorite authors...I've never given any of her books fewer than 4 stars until now.
I just didn't care about these characters, most felt like caricatures of real people. This is definitely a story where you need to care about the characters, or at least find them interesting. I purchased the audiobook because I thought it could help keep me more engaged after I struggled with connecting with the book from the library. But nope, it's the writing and the story that don't do it for me. I DNF'd about halfway through and have no interest in what ends up happening to these characters. Not sure if I'll return the audio or try to give it another chance at some point...leaning towards returning.
So many of my favorites have disappointed this year, I'm afraid to read Lorena Hughes, Isabel CaƱas, and Lisa Jewell's recent works.

It sometimes teetered into YA land but overall a good adult fiction debut! The beautiful writing is there the cultural representation and diversity, all there. It was a great plot and I loved the magical realism.
