This middle grade graphic novel was inspired by Italian city-states from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Young Cinzia works as an apprentice for a woman who creates avvisi, which are their society's newspapers. However, when they break news about the corrupt Magistrate, they are seized for riling up the cityfolk. But Cinzia breaks free and asserts their freedom of speech, and through the power of the people they fight to continue reporting the news.

This was really great! It was inspiring and empowering. I loved the many different main female characters. The illustrations were well done and we get a lot of top-down maplike views of the city, which were fun and satisfying. I love how they rallied everyone together to fight for the cause. This might be a bit dense for young ones so probably better for an older middle grade reader.

This is a fabulous middle grade graphic novel set in an imaginary medieval Italian-esque land. Representation is strong--disability, neurodivergence, gender. I love the message about speaking truth to power and what the press is for, led by a group of strong girls. It's beautiful and powerful.
