Enjoyed this, but was not blown away by it. It's the first book by Erdrich I've read, and I understand it's not typical of her work. Despite that, I liked the dystopian sci-fi vibe, and dug the main character. There are some beautiful passages, some deep thoughts and ideas about society (what is progress? evolution? the importance of beauty to humanity's survival), and some stellar descriptive writing. A believable and scary near-future alternate reality.

Well that was dark. Incredible, but so sad.

Very interesting and well written. Would have like more world building. Deeply affecting.
I made it halfway though and still didn't care. I'm not giving it any more time.

Thoughts
I love dystopian novels and Erdrich did an amazing job of giving us one that was unique, masterful, and terrifying.
Like any good dystopian novel, it starts with the slow dread of something sinister looming until one day Cedar wakes up and turns on the TV and there are no People of Color. It seems like they have been completely erased. Pregnant women are being monitored and held in facilities. And Cedar is forced to come face to face with what is happening.
This is my second book by Erdrich and it was so different than The Sentence but also so good. I already started buying all of her books and I am even more excited to get to them now.

Pretty much what you'd expect from a dystopian novel by Louise Erdrich, but not as good. Beautifully lyrical portions, religious iconography, complicated familial relationships -- but a disjointed and uneven narrative.
