This was one of those books that was so good, but did not make me feel good. It reminds me of Severance, another book that I loved but made me stressed about society as a whole.
The collapse of society that is depicted in this book felt all too real to me, and I loved the narrative choice to use diary entries. It keeps us in the dark just a perfect amount, while reminding us that even amongst the most turbulent times, there are still maddeningly mundane things to deal with.
I was particularly frustrated with how many stupid choices our protagonist makes, but I suppose there had to be something there to propel the narrative forward. I also think I need to reread this at some point because it feels like there is still something hidden in this book and it's metaphors that I haven't yet got a full grasp on. (But that could be wishful thinking? Who knows.)
Either way, I recommend it!

This is such a powerful example of a book that is so good but outside of my wheelhouse. If you want to read about someone navigating what family is, how heritage impacts us, and how all of that crashes together when you're expecting a child, this would be a great book for you. It is a lovely piece of literary fiction that uses a lot of Catholic references. If that sounds like your jam, you'll probably love it.
