to be honest i found this book kind of confusing and thought it was just me not paying close enough attention, but after checking out some other reviews i see i'm not the only one who felt that way. there are some interesting ideas in this book and good passages - ("if it comes your time to suffer, just remember. someone suffered for you. that is what taking on a cloak of human flesh is all about, the willingness to hurt for another human being") - but the whole thing felt so specifically in response to "trump era" politics that it was hard to separate the actual story from that context for me.
I haven't quite figured out how I felt about this one. This is the first Louise Erdrich I've read, so I don't know if the slightly manic, stream-of-consciousness tone is one of her trademarks or just this book's. It took me a while to get used to it, and discovering the world's changes at the same time as Cedar was a little disconcerting/confusing, but overall, I enjoyed it. A little heavy on the religious rhetoric for my taste.

I'm not sure Erdrich could write a bad book if she tried. She has an innate sense as an author and storyteller. But unless I missed it, this book is missing an essential explanation of the plot. And a reason to care much for the main character? And I get the references to global warming, but backward evolution? There can't be such a thing, even in science fiction. But, since it's never explained anyway maybe I don't need to care.
It's best feature was that I listened to it as read by the author. I do think she is one of the best there is, even if there's a "miss" every now and then.

Very well written and a interesting plot, but it was kind of slow. The book focused more on the protagonist's thoughts than what was going on in the outside world. It would have been better to hear more of how the world was falling apart, but overall it was an interesting story.
