I'm not sure what to think of this one yet. It was in Handmaid's Tale territory; when a strange change in evolutionary results of reproduction has spooked the humans. Cedar is a pregnant Minnesotan learning about Catholicism and her native background - she just needs to survive the circumstances surrounding her birthing.

This book was a slightly chilling post-apocalyptic story where society, creatures, and the environment have started to devolve. I listened to it as an audiobook, so maybe I would've connected with the emotions more if I had read it. The main character is a young Indigenous woman, raised Catholic, who is living in the States. She becomes pregnant at a time where babies are very precious - Handmaid's vibe for sure!

The quiet, contemplative visions of the apocalypse are much stronger than the book's thriller elements, but it remains eloquently and eruditely written throughout.

A book for lockdowns and for processing a dystopian future. The book took a while to work on me, but I was moved by the end.

Louise Erdrich captured my attention with the way she wrote Cedar's character. Cedar is navigating a dystopian world while pregnant and her life is at the highest risk. I was able to connect with Cedar as she questions and worries about her child and what kind of life the child will go on to have. There was a slight trigger warning for myself as the book described more about the country and the unrest, as we too have been going through a period of uncertainty. I thought the story was well written and there were many messages from family to life for a reader to take away with them.
