I really liked this book. I have one nit-picky complaint, though: I was disappointed that through Cedar, a serious student of and convert to Catholicism, Erdrich reinforces the incorrect notion that the Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of Jesus in Mary's womb, rather than Mary's conception. The Immaculate Conception refers to the fact that Mary herself was conceived without original sin. Cedar would surely have known this.
Even our favorite authors can sometimes disappoint. I liked the message if this book but it fell down in the execution. Too many weird details and not enough resolution of the big questions.
I’ll start out by saying I love Louise Erdrich’s writing and I love apocalypse stories. There is always a native perspective. This was one of the scariest apocalypse stories I have read. I saw the complaint of some other readers that this was a rewrite of the Handmaiden’s Tale, which I haven’t read, but know the basics of. That may or may not be true, but every writer has a different audience. This book gives me a lot more to think about regarding the climate change crisis which I’ve already been concerned about. I hope some others who may not typically care about climate change get their interest peaked.
I enjoyed reading this book, Cedar and her family are very likable. I did not understand overall what was going on. The whole apocalypse felt like it could be a conspiracy.
Huh?
The book description is so promising but the novel itself DOES NOT deliver. Everything about the government and backward evolution is vague, unexplained, and/or ridiculous. Cedar reads like an immature teenager even though she is supposed to be an adult woman. I really hated everything about this book. I can't believe I finished it.
