Dystopian fiction. Anyone who reads my reviews knows that I am a sucker for an interesting survival story (even if the premise is based on apocalypse, or in this case, a reverse in evolution). I was totally immersed in this novel and now I am very curious to read more from Erdrich, especially award-winning LaRose.
I loved this. I loved the writing, I loved the pacing, I loved the characters.
I wanted a lot more world-building, because I felt like the plot didn't quite unfold naturally from the apocalyptic conceit. I took off a star for that, but I also feel like the world-building wasn't really the point.
I suspect this is not the best of Erdrich's work, but that's exciting to me rather than disappointing, because this is the first of her books that I've read.

Too quiet to hear on the bus, and then the library recalled it.
DNF ... Erdrich is another author whose stories and writing style I just cannot get into.
Giving up on this one. I am so incredibly bored and I have no idea what is going on. Since I really don't care if I find out at this point I am turning this one back in to the library and moving on.
A departure from Erdrich previous books, Future Home of the Living God is the story of Cedar, a young pregnant woman who goes looking for her birth family as the apocalypse unfolds around her. The novel is written as a journal from Cedar to her unborn baby she tries to piece together her Native American heritage, her Catholic faith her and place and the place of her child in a world where evolution seems to be rapidly reversing and society is breaking down. Erdrich captures the joys and fears of a soon to be mother and the dread and confusion of global disaster. Recommended for fans of The Handmaid's Tale. Not recommended for anyone who is currently expecting.
ARC from Edelweiss, the opinions of the book are my own.

It ended the only way it could, and it broke my heart.
