I will never recover

Miałam spore oczekiwania co do tej książki i jak w jednym momencie byłam zachwycona to za chwilę mi się nie podobała. Czasami też się mi się dłużyło czytanie, ale przebrnęłam i patrząc na całokształt nie było najgorzej.

For Bridges Book Club, but it put me in a slump and I didn't read it fast enough to attend.

Very hard to rate:
The first 280 pages, 3.5. The last 70 pages, 4.25.
I don't know the source / original story so I don't know what is new perspective and what is not, or what is coming.
Really sad! Most books have a redeeming arc where things come right in the end. Nope, not here.

It's important or useful to read to fill you in on more of the Trojan War. The slightly different portrayals of Odysseus and Agamemnon compared to Clare North's Ithaca trilogy are interesting. Heroes doing heroic things are not treated with as much ridicule here.

From Patroclus' perspective... princes raised (and prophesied) for great things. He meets Achilles firstly when both are forced to present as suitors for Helen, Clytemnestra and Penelope, later when Patroclus is fostered by Achilles' father... and the book mainly follows the development of their relationship, into the Trojan War. Petty kings, petty gods, honour something something heroes and pride, more meddling by gods, death. Given that P and A know what is coming - sort of, vague Fates - the last half of the book is a slow motion walk into the sadness.
