I tried to like this book. I really did, but considering the time I took to finish, that mission was failed miserably.
I was SO BORED, I actually wanted to remove my eyeballs everytime I sat down to read.
I vividly remember reading this for a full day - horrid mistake - i was enable to touch a book for months. Lesson learned, guess.
Moving on to my opinion on the actual plot.
I hated Patroclus' personality (because he barely had one, considering he spent almost the entirety of the book expressing his INTENSE love for Achilles. Like, yes, he's the love of your life, BUT SERIOUSLY, COULDN'T YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE???)
The part where I actually appreciated him was when defending Briseis and when he died. (the only parts he CONTRIBUTED TO THE STORYLINE IN A MEANINGFUL WAY).
Besides that, there's also Achilles. He became prideful to a point where he would let HUNDREDS of people die because of Agammenon, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? All those years with Chiron taught you NOTHING. You have become exactly like your mother.
Also, regarding this situation, Patroclus got mad at him for like 2 pages and then forgave him, why? BECAUSE HE HAS NO PERSONALITY ASIDE FROM LICKING THE GROUND ACHILLES STEPS ON.
Furthermore, I found it infuriating that we come to find out Patroclus' brilliant healer skills, but that, in my opinion, was never explored enough. Again, stripping away his personality.
Lastly, I did enjoy the last 50 pages, but seeing as this had 300+, it was not worth it, imo.
It hurts to have hated this book, since I ADORE the myth.
DISCLAIMER: This review contains MY OPINION, based on MY thoughts throughout the book, so, if you liked it, feel free to disagree, kindly.

Eerrrrr honestly quite disappointed because this is one of the most hyped books ever. Will admit that I did not read the Iliad and most of my knowledge comes from Reddit but I really did not like how Patroclus was portrayed in this book. Miller made him seem like a lovesick puppy who’s only purpose in life was to follow Achilles around and clean up his mess, when in fact he was one of the most decorated warriors during his time in the Trojan War. Really rubbed me off the wrong way. There was not really any chemistry between Achilles and Patroclus and I expected a lot more explosiveness between them. Intrigued to read Circe though
kinda disappointed after all the hype for this book. overall the writing itself was beautiful which is where all the stars come from and i was interested during some of the parts but i never had the i cant put this down feeling. maybe like a 'im tired of binge watching degrassi so im just gonna keep reading' feeling but never like i was sucked in. it was honestly really really boring. i felt like i developed no connection to either patroclus or achilles whatsoever so the little tragedy at the end did nothing for me. i was deadass skipping pages like i just wanted to be done. and like ik the love between them is pretty much the whole point of the book but i also just didnt really care. it was very much these bitches gay good for them the whole time. also not to sound uppity but i thought we all knew the story of achilles so again the ending was not as tragic as everyone made it seem. but i did like the little part at the end where patroclus remembers who achilles really was bc that was nice to end with a less negative view on achilles. anyways 3/5

Edit: another read… still one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking experiences a book offers. I love this book more than anything.
I am not kidding when I say I finished this book an hour ago and have not stopped crying.
The whole time, I was like “ok, you know what’s coming… you can handle it”… well, I, in fact, could NOT handle it.
This may be the most heartbreaking and beautiful story I have ever and will ever read. If you want to be absolutely destroyed while also being thankful for every single second of misery, pick up this book. Will I read it again? I don’t know… I truly don’t know if my little heart can handle it. But I will probably think of this story every day for the rest of my life.
