Another lovely reimagining of Greek Mythology. The back story of Patroclus and Achilles and the development of their relationship was beautiful and tender. The second half was less gripping as Patroclus becomes unbearably mopey without his boyfriend. While the ending was inevitably moving and sad, by that point I was a little bit less invested.

These stories of men are not for me anymore! What a waste! I should have just read The Ilyad and complained about the arrogance of men in such times!
The love story is reasonably entertaining, but most of these men are horrible and they are mostly horrible to women in general. It is an unnecessary war for the greed of men and at a certain point, Helen is not even mentioned anymore!
And ten years of fighting, how could anyone endure such a thing?
The writing is good, but I do hope Circe is better.
Not sure if I want to come back to the Gods again so soon.

Pretty great retelling of the myth, creative liberties were handled well. I’m not one for romance but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would’ve been a five star if it weren’t for the Diomedes libel, leave my boy alone >:(

While Madeline Miller’s writing is lush and descriptive, I unfortunately found the first 150 pages to be slow and hard to get through.
My eyes are still puffy and sluggish from grief. From mourning someone whose thoughts and words lived in my head over the past five hours.
Madeline Miller deserves a place amongst heroes like Achilles and Patroclus. For giving a life to their story, for giving us a glimpse into their love. Into the relationship that drove them both. It was beautiful, the way she depicted their slow and easy love. The prose flowed like water in spring: simple and inevitable, without flourish.
Thank you for reminding me of the joy of young love and mythology.
