I really enjoyed this, but I wish the ending had a bit more resolution. I love you Sumire
sputnik sweetheart was filled with such a delicate, quiet sadness--one that creeps up and slowly swallows you. murakami's prose is very simple, very sterile (as if something were perpetually missing from it)--and yet the scenes that he painted were strikingly vivid. i could picture everything so clearly... it was as if i was the narrator: as if i were the one picking up the receiver at 3 in the morning, as if i were the one reading novels in japanese coffee shops, as if i were the one staring out at the sea from a tiny greek island...... as if i were hopelessly trapped in one-sided love.
oh also besides the prose i really loved the characters!!! k was a bit weird at first but idk chapter 5 really made me like him!!! also miu and sumire my beloveds <3
idk why but miu's entire character is just so so tragic to me and i could not stop thinking about her... well, everyone was tragic in this novel, but maybe it was just because of all the things that miu lost, and the one big "almost" in her life. i just absolutely LOST IT after that one scene where sumire asked miu if she was sorry to give up the piano. "you'd almost made it..." AHH--it's just such a haunting, foreboding message. that life will fly by in an instant. suddenly, you're 38 years old, and dreams have withered away to nothing, and you're working your corporate 9 to 5, clawing your way up the ladder of capitalism HGJKNGJKG IM EMOTIONALLY RUINED
anyway, yeah, the themes/overall message was just something i really liked about this novel, and i think murakami executed it very well. so much loneliness, so much desire; longing... it's really a wonder how we deal with it all. but in the end, we do.
5 stars.
