murakami has like one trick and thats it, but this one had a little less awful writing of women than norwegian wood so i guess that’s good
"I really wanted to see you," I said.
"And I really wanted to see you, too," she said. "When I couldn't see you anymore, I realized that. It was as clear as if the planets all of a sudden lined up in a row for me. I really need you. You're a part of me; I'm a part of you. You know, somewhere—I'm not sure at all where—I think I cut something's throat. Sharpening my knife, my heart a stone. Symbolically, like making a gate in China. Do you understand what I'm saying?"
"I think so."
"Then come and get me."
the person with the second most popular review will never get it cuz you're freaking crazy if you think this kafka and wind-up bird chronicle follows the same structure. like norwegian wood i one hundred percent agree with this is that but better and hardboiled wonderland i can see the point, i think they're wrong here as well but there's room for argument. wind-up bird chronicle being the same as this? do not piss me off. anyway i liked this quiet disruption from normal life, i started this assuming it would be more realistic and it was a pleasure seeing how it unwinds. the protagonist here really worked for me in the same way that mieko kawakami's protagonist in breast and eggs part one only works because the protagonist is used as a way to convey the story. needless to say i really enjoyed this book

- a lot more space for metaphorical interpretation compared to the other murakami books i’ve read - actual real-life metaphorical application
- a lot less surrealism than i expected
- more tame than the other murakamis i’ve read
- pretty good explanation of the queer discovery - bravo my man
- “‘If people weren’t equal, where would you fit in?’” (pg. 191) - heavy ass q

haruki murakami needed talent to make the first half of the book so mid and the second so good
