A pleasantly dreamy style and some interesting metaphysical jaunts, but ultimately punctured far too often by the usual tiresome tropes of the Male Author Writing Women: bizarre and invasive attention to breasts, minimizing queer women's agency and identity, and sexual assault as recurring and foundational theme.

2.5/5

The weakest of Murakami's works that I've read...or maybe I've just gotten too used to some of his tropes and have started taking them for granted. If Goodreads had the option, I'd give this a 2.5 instead of a 2 solely because of the mesmerizing scene with the Ferris wheel.

This book has reignited my passion for Murakami ... the beautiful writing, the quirky kafka-esque stories. Love love love!

I understand why people love (and hate) Murakami. His reading is so immersive, apart from the super weird intimate scenes he puts into the story. Need a Sumire in my life
