Old School April Readathon 2023

I still really like this series, Finlay and Vero get up to the craziest things, and they're so fun and entertaining, but I feel myself desiring for the conclusion to the whole mob plot and seeing everyone get their happy endings. Certain things are starting to feel a little too drawn out, and I just hope that book four will give us a satisfying conclusion to Finlay's story.

The mystery felt a little lower stakes (not sure why, but they did), and it took me about half the book to get hooked, meanwhile the first two I was hooked almost immediately. I'm also sad about Julian. I like Nick and all, he seems like the more obvious "correct" choice, but Julian really stole my heart in the other two, and I love a good age gap romance.

When I got to the finale though, I was quite surprised out how much the tension really shot up, and that cliffhanger has me excited.

Man, I rated the first book in the series 5 stars, and it's just been doing downhill since. This one felt like a long filler that should have been 3 chapters.

Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun follows Finlay and Vero over the course of a week where they're participating in the citizens police academy (being led by Nick). Feliks, the mob boss who Finlay's shenanigans have her tangled up with, has a looming threat of turning Finlay over to the police unless she can figure out the identity of EasyClean before the week is up.

This was a RIDE. Couldn't put it down because I was having too much fun reading. I love these characters. Finlay and Vero are such an iconic duo and they constantly have me in stitches. On top of being hilarious and kind of ridiculous, Elle Cosimano manages to make the stakes feel super high. I'm having lots of fun, but I'm on the edge of my seat nervous for these characters at the same time. The somewhat isolated setting of the police academy gave the story an added thrill.

The ending of every book in this series gives me the same feeling as a season of my favorite show ending on a cliffhanger. I'm so sad I have to wait a whole year to find out what happens next, but I'll gladly keep reading as long as Elle Cosimano keeps writing!

thank you to netgalley and to the publisher for an arc in exchange for my honest review!
