I don't know if it's the so-called "Covid brain," but I managed to make it through the whole audiobook while absorbing maybe 5 - 10% of the contents. Then again, I had a similar experience with Northanger Abbey almost a decade ago. No rating, but if I ever attempt Austen again, I'll have to try an old-fashioned ink-on-paper book.

I liked this book more than Pride and Prejudice, partially because the family members are quite silly and it's more of a missed connection story. Captain Wentworth isn't a jerk like Mr. Darcy is at first; it's Anne who wronged him. But the problem I have with both is how the ending is so tidy. Austen spends fully 90% of this short novel setting up the moment that Anne discovers the truth of Captain Wentworth and Mr Elliott, and then (like in P&P) there is a glorious letter from the good Captain that is more heartfelt and persuasive (huh) than Darcy's letter. And then the book is over a few pages later. I should have enjoyed a bit more falling action, an area where modern romances also tend to lack. It seems that Austen, by her own deficiency in story structure, set a template for the modern genre to possess the same structural deficiencies.

Yo, the tension in this boooook!
I mean I knew it was gonna be a happy ending, but austen loved to tease us and the journey was such a nail biter.
We stan Captain Wentworth hard!
Not a 5 star because I get real sick of some of the useless commentary and fluff. I know descriptions of the streets and houses were all the rage, but I don’t need it.

I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't as good as Pride & Prejudice. It was pretty typical Jane Austen, but the characters didn't have as much depth as usual.

Anne Elliot is a little too perfect for my taste. Her character flaws seem to be all in the past.
