"People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true...No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in."

This was a fascinating, if quick, read. Rosa Parks's refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus kickstarted the modern US Civil Rights Movement. She grew up listening to her grandfather's stories of how badly he was treated as an enslaved boy. This was the same grandfather who kept a
shotgun next to him at all times, to defend his family against the Ku Klux Klan.

By the time she was six she realized that Black people were still not free. She did not get her high school diploma until she was 20, as she had to work to support her family. As a married woman in Montgomery, she kept watch as her husband held organizing meetings with other Black men, because if whites found out they were meeting, they could be killed.

This autobiography made me realize how vital community organizing is. Before she made her fateful decision Parks had volunteered for many groups and was a NAACP organizer. She was also a graduate of the Highlander Folk School (whose work training activists continues today: www.highlandercenter.org), where she met another dedicated civil rights activist, Septima Clark.

If you need some inspiration, or a lesson in humility, read this book.

Really good book. I love the way she writes, its easy to read but not boring at all. I loved knowing more about her life. Really loved this book, took me less than a day to read but it was fascinating, I wish she had written more books.

"Everyone living together in peace and harmony and love... that's the goal that we seem, and I think that the more people there are who reach that state of mind, the better we will all be."

It was both beautiful and incredibly moving to read Rosa Parks’s story told in her own words. A quick read that will leave a lasting impact.

Rosa in her own words. She talks about her family tree, growing up in the south, and everything after the bus. It’s fantastic!
