Not my favorite of hers. The last third could have used a better editor.

In No Mark Upon Her, Crombie explores the worlds of competitive rowing and canine search and rescue. I love Crombie's writing and she just keeps getting better, so I plunged in even though these subjects didn't float my boat, so to speak. It wasn't long before I was hooked. The mystery is compelling and wraps up with some nice twists. The book continues the arc of Gemma and Duncan's personal life, after they take in three-year old Charlotte, who was orphaned in Crombie's previous book, Necessary as Blood. I especially loved how Duncan Kincaid's character changes in this book. He embraces and learns to bond with yet another child, a daughter, and takes a stand against deception and abuse in police ranks that may cost him his job. I loved seeing him kick butt and grow in this book. At the end of the book, Kincaid is starting a two-month leave from the force to be a house husband. I am looking forward to seeing how Crombie navigates his character through this new stage in his life.

Crombie is back in good form in this and mixes the mystery with Kincaid's and James's lives well.

This series was recommended to me previously, so I was pleased to find it in the book swag bag I received a conference last month. Normally I try to read series in order but I decided to dive in rather than try to play catch up first. I did feel like I missed out a bit not knowing the backstories of the two main characters (DI Gemma James and Scotland Yard superintendent Duncan Kincaid) but still enjoyed this one. I liked the writing and the complex story--it was a great pick for a last minute train trip and helped the ride go by quickly. I plan to read the earlier installments in the series and am glad I finally got a chance to check it out!

Reading a Deborah Crombie novel is always something to look forward to, and No Mark Upon Her was no exception. The mystery centers on the murder of an extremely talented rower whose life turns out to be a bit complicated. Duncan, Gemma, and the supporting cast are all here and continue to be a great group of people to spend a couple of hours with.
