The back of the book mentions the train goes at 200mph, I read through this book at that speed. Absolutely loved it, and different enough from the movie to still greatly enjoy the twists and turns. I was smiling like a fool as I read this on the (much slower!) train.
I am docking an entire star for the handling of the ‘drag’ character, whose descriptions and behaviours had transphobic undertones. (They were dirty, hyper-sexual and other than Nanao the people they interacted with were phobic to them) I know drag doesn’t mean trans, but you can often tell people’s thoughts about trans people by their thoughts about drag.
There’s more books in this series, so I’m going to be hunting those down.

For a light read this is amazing stuff, very well written.
Top stuff lemon.
Top stuff lemon.
I speed-read through this because it seemed like the most appropriate method of getting through the book. Like a lot of people, I decided to read this because of the upcoming movie. Just from the previews I can see they changed some things, but I won't go into that here.
I will say that I think some of the humor is probably lost in translation and because I'm a Western reader. I think this is a satire of how the yakuza and other characters like them are portrayed, and I thought that was done pretty well just based on what little I know of it. I can't say that I completely understood why Lemon's hyperfixation was chosen to be "Thomas and Friends", of all things, but I did appreciate that final joke. That was probably one of the funniest parts of the book for me.
Overall it was fairly entertaining. It was basically just these various assassins/professional killers running around while a psychopathic child fucks with them, so it was fun. It did sort of feel like it was all built up to nothing. The kid seemed like the main threat of the book and he just disappeared. The other thing-- the suitcase and all the build-up around that-- just sort of petered out at the end. Maybe that was the whole point of it or I missed something due to speeding through it.
I still enjoyed it and I would still recommend it for people, but I would tell them the fun is just in how ridiculous it can get (especially the characters interacting with each other) and just going through the Japanese version of "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" with hired killers.
