This was a DENSE book. It was THIQQUE with world building and just… so fuckin much political anguish. The scenes of torture and abuse and the beheading scene were intense and the corrupt, the betrayal, the pain. It was a whole lot. And the surprise ending was… wow.

I went through this book pretty fast. It took a couple chapters to get in to but it was really engaging throughout the middle. The overall story was okay but I felt the writing was subpar and the plot was pretty predictable.

It’s a fun, easy read but it doesn’t really have anything that sets it apart.  I don’t know if I’m interested enough in the story to continue the series.

I was intrigued by the idea of the story and how it would play out, and often found myself not knowing what outcome to root for throughout, which I deem as a positive. However, the book does hold a strong resemblance to other YA dystopian novels I’ve read (Hunger Games, Divergent) and I’m never a fan of first-person in books.

There were parts I didn’t understand nor like, such as the plan that gets developed near the end. Considering that the characters have known each other for only about a month, they were really quick to rely on an assumption and was already pretty weak in itself.

Nonetheless, I’m not one to abandon a book series and will be reading until the end. I’m not jumping at the need to move forward, but I am excited to see where the story goes.

This book delves into a new world, that feels like we've all been to it before. A tale we've all read before but  retold with a couple new ideas. It sets racial issues in a tone and genre that is "comfortable and consumable".  (Especially for younger people.) It also allows the reader room to update preconceived concepts of their own privileges.
While also giving a interesting story with a crazy ending plot twist.
