this book was so fun!! i loved how it cracked open some of the more archaic and gendered iterations of the zodiac... the perfect blend of a fresh, insightful and deeply meaning way of looking at astrology YET staying relevant, fun, and full of pop culture goodies! rtc maybe

A good book about the basics about astrology. I think it needs a little bit more of information and more arguments that support the author's idea, but in general I really enjoy it and i learn more about the topic

A newer more modern look at astrology. I wish she would’ve gotten deeper into sun/moon signs specially. Still enjoyable to read about my kids’ signs!

I came to this without much knowledge of astrology. I really appreciated the pop culture examples of the different signs and the emphasis that no sign is better than any other. It seems that some of the author’s views are subversive, but that wasn’t as impactful for me since I didn’t know what she was subverting. I think this would be a better second book to read about astrology rather than a first.

So much more than just an astrology book. Claire Comstock-Gay offers a generous and deeply human read of every sign in the zodiac, often reminding us of that each of us holds revolutionary power in our own way. Each sign is connected to and brought into conversation with public figures, from Miley Cyrus, to Celine Dion, to Susan Sontag, to Fred Rogers - I really enjoyed the range of irreverent but spot-on connections. The writing is also truly stunning and BONUS... it’s a beautifully printed physical object with gorgeous blue typeset.

Always enjoyed her column in The Rumblr and later The Cut, and was excited when she announced she was writing a book! I’ve long loved reading about astrology, from horoscopes to astro web pages and even Wikipedia about the signs. It stemmed from my interest in Greek mythology, when I started learning that some mythological figures were iconised as constellations. If you like astrology but you’re sick of the memes and find them basic and reductive, you may want to start with this book which is both a gentle and fun look at the sun signs. She also discusses why people have turned to astrology, for centuries now. I don’t think it’s just for astrology nerds though. There’s so much in here about what it takes to be a person - to be kind, gentle, and loving. It is wrong to look towards only the traits of your sun sign, but right to be inspired by the positive attributes of all of them.

I hope she writes more and goes deeper.

I really really enjoyed this! The chapters on Virgo and Pisces particularly moved me, and I quite appreciate Comstock-Gay's approach to astrology, "At its best, astrology gives us tools for understanding ourselves and other people...astrology lets us see ourselves as ourselves--and other people as their own strange and complicated selves, too" (13). The writing is beautiful and readable, broken up by sign into a series of essays, and the physical book is a pleasure to look at. Definitely a great read in a time of high-stress, uncertainty, and desolation.
