This is volume 6 in a series. It is a direct continuation of previous events and is not a stand alone work. Without the previous issues, or knowledge of characters in the Hellboy universe, you might expect to be a bit on the confused side.

But, if you like battles with strange monsters and you like Hellboy, then this is a great book, but you should probably read the previous volumes first. There are gruesome monsters that evolve and ooze and are nothing like I've seen in other works.

The work by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi is good and there are a huge range of characters, which are all unique and easy to identify. Sometimes in huge character books, the artistic style can blur characters together, but I had no trouble distinguishing, so that speaks to good artistic ability. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but there is also about 40 pages of sketches and character development that i found interesting.

Not my favorite collection. It’s a lot of set up, but it’s still solid.

A very fun collection. James Harren returns for some spectacular set pieces, and the exorcist storyline at the end is very interesting.

Zinco finally managed to achieve the goal of bringing back the master. After masterfully deceiving the BPRD to get required equipment (oh, Johann, Johann) Zinco will finally bring back the master - but not the one you would expect, no. That one pops up in the middle of the complete crazy events with monsters rising up and destroying everything (again), horrid mutations twisting and turning everyone and anything into snapping jaws.

Very interesting book, it seems like darksiders are gaining the upper hand.

Recommended.

Story continues as BPRD finds itself engaged with what looks like latest wave of monster invasion. We are given more information on Howards (agent that dell in coma after getting in contact with the ancient sword relic).

While this does look like a filler (Blackflame stumping around New York notwithstanding) I like when story meanders a bit. I guess I would be upset if I followed this regularly (same way I would get upset with the TV shows) but reading collected volumes after a time distance makes this (at least to me) an enjoyable read.

Things are heating up and although BPRD now has "license to kill with prejudice" invasion of hellish creatures might be something they and Earth might have true problems recovering from.

Recommended to series fans, but if you are expecting story development, twists and turns you might miss this one out, I dont think you will actually miss anything crucial.

Johan just cannot catch a break. When events in one of the provincial towns in US (it is surprising that there are still survivors in the country) go bad, he again gets ostracized by his teammates. This will push him towards a radical move - to try to exculpate himself by activating the mysterious armor remains of WW2 legend, Sledgehammer 44. Its gonna be interesting to see if Johan becomes more action oriented character in future volumes. Him in armor and Liz with her firepower, man that would be quite a team.

Again, another filler for the series, so if you are expecting some major story-line advance you might be disappointed. For me, it is lore filler (first time I came across Sledgehammer character) and I enjoyed it.

Recommended to the fans of the series.

For some reason another filler book (which was a bit of a surprise considering how previous book ended).

We are introduced to BPRD agent Ashley Strode, agent who unwittingly (Kate Corrigan knows how to motivate people, devious, man, absolutely devious) gets involved into pretty nasty case of exorcism.

Very soon she will become an expert in the field and stories in this volume seem to be aimed at establishing her as a true daemon hunter [very like W40K inquisition, weapons and all :)].

Interesting story but absolute detour from the main story-line. If Ashley does not play an important role down the lane, I gotta admit I dont see the point. But from the merit of the story itself it is pretty well written and drawn.

Recommended to fans of BPRD and Hellboy universe.

I strongly prefer the smaller tales in this universe to the big monsters taking over the whole world.

Continues to feel like the pacing is way off in the Hell on Earth series, but still way better then the unreadable Hellboy books of late.
