Couldn’t get into it

I just read a little gem of a book by Jonathan Rogers. Although the cover doesn't say it, it's based loosely on the Bible story of David. It's called The Bark of the Bog Owl

This is one of those books that would be fantastic to read to your kids. Or if you have older boys who like to read, I think they'd love it. The hero of the story is a young boy, just twelve years old, who does incredible things with the help of God.

The Christian message is there, but it didn't feel preachy at all. It was just a fun adventure story. This may be one that I would purchase, just so I could read it with my kids and have it in my book collection. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

True rating 3.5 stars. My family enjoyed this book as an audiobook in the car. It was fun to hear the author read. The setting took me a while to place. With old English medieval names and southern bayou setting it was muttled for me to grasp this fantastical world.

Lots of Christian patriotism and biblical undertones. It felt a little heavy-handed to me but my kids liked finding the obvious connections.

We’ll read the rest of the trilogy. Not one that will necessarily stay with me for a long time but my kids really liked it.

This book was recommended to me as being similar to the wingfeather saga. I agree, there are some similarities, but this trilogy is definitely a King David reimagining, whereas the wingfeather saga was an original concept. The way the author narrated it was humorous, and I like the segments that involved the feechiefolk, but I wish the illusions to the Bible were more subtle. I’d rather just read a retelling without fantasy elements than one that just follows scripture very closely but adds in whimsical, fantasy elements. Unsure if I will continue.

I read this aloud to the boys, ages 7 and 5. My 7yo loved it but most of it was lost on my 5yo. He liked the bits with Dobro the feechie boy the best :) It is a fictional version of when Saul chooses young David the shepherd to be king. Instead, King Darrow chooses Aidan to be the Wilderking. It is fantastically well-written and I really enjoyed it! I'd like to continue the series but maybe in a year or so when my youngest would be more interested. Our favorite part was when they were all in the mine, singing their miners' song.
