I doubt there are many of us these days who are under any illusion as to the nature of fighting in the trenches in the First World War, but being taken along on the journey of a group of young men, barely out of school, watching the damage done to them not just physically, but also emotionally, is devastating. The fact that this story is told from the viewpoint of a German soldier is irrelevant. It is simply the facts of trench warfare.

Since I learned what the Lost Generation really means, I was deeply saddened and intrigued by it.

However, being an American concept, or at least something started there, I wasn't expecting to find anything particular related to it in an audiobook by German author I picked because I was looking for something short to fullfil a prompt for a readathon.

I started the book with zero expectations. Actually, I thought I probably will be bored by it and will have to push through it if I wouldn't dnf. (Not the best experience with classics here). I was so wrong.

Words are not enough to say how heartbreaking this tale is. How the really, really sad part is that everything happening there, has happened in real life.

The book itself is an open, aching wound. And in the same time is a love, sad letter to all people lost in wars that had nothing to do with them. Lost in every possible way a young person - young people - can be consumed and destroyed by war.
