I had to read this back in college for my Western Civ pt. 2 class, t'was one of my favorite classes at U of A and will forever be thankful to Dr. Peacock for introducing me to some new literature!

This book talks about the life of a young soldier through the years he was enlisted in the German army during the period of the First World War. This relatively modern translation from German by Brian Murdoch is a beautiful narrative, a plunge into the fears and the hopes of the millions, who are actually plundered by these times of war, of their youth, their desires and their dreams. It tells you what the real war is; that it is not fought between countries, it is fought between humans. It is not an abstract concept; that it is fought with bullets, bayonets and shells, that rips, tears and burns. Apart from being extremely visceral in its style, you can feel its honesty. Stripped away from honour and glory, a war is no longer a "Call of Duty", killing others doesn't bring you "Medal of Honour". How worthless it is and those who are fighting with their bodies and limbs, with their blood and sweat, can tell you that they are trying to run away from its hold, towards the end of it, the ends being caught up between peace and death.

A wonderful book. It absolutely broke me by the time I was done reading it. Remarque has such an immersive way of describing emotion, which made each scene- Especially the quieter ones in between the scenes of heavy bombardment and intense trench warfare- so incredibly powerful.
