5 stars 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕

Please note that I rate this book based on the literary side of the book not the author’s story

🧠 My thoughts
I couldn’t help but rate this book 5 stars, it’s well-deserved and also because it’s hard for me to find a memoir that is both relatable and able to touch my heart. I didn’t know or hear about Simu Liu until Kim’s Convenience and I’m just quite at the beginning of the series. His character in the series – Jung – caught my attention and I decided to listen to his story. I was glad I picked up the book.

It was truly touching to see the author’s honesty and vulnerability in the book. It was also heartbreaking to witness the domestic abuse he suffered when he was young. As an Asian myself, I’m pretty sure many children in his and my generation had to go through domestic abuse like this just because we can’t live up to our parents’ expectations. His story was so inspiring as well. No matter how many challenges were placed in front of him, he just never gave up to pursue his dream. He was truly a hero in his own story. While narrating the audiobook, when he got to the acknowledgment, his voice broke because he was emotional mentioning his grandparents and his dog. It was just so real and touching.

I was also surprised at his writing skills. It was so engaging to read his story, I flew through the book in less than 2 days. I can’t really find anything to nitpick here. Everything was splendid.

đź‘Ť What I like
  • Inspiring and engaging story
  • Good writing skills
  • Down-to-earth, honest, and humble

đź‘Ž What I don't like
  • I can’t find anything to nitpick here

Really well-written memoir by Simu. While some parts were hilarious, there was also a lot of sobering trauma that was discussed. Overall an honest, often humorous account of his and his family's experience in moving to Canada and of the realities facing Asian communities and individuals in North America today.

the audiobook is SUBLIME, simu liu's voice and emotion and storytelling and reflections here are great, this would be a perfect choice for any marvel bro looking to get into the celeb memoir scene, but also is complex and heartwrenching enough to appeal to someone like me who just loves a story about following dreams

Simu Liu was already a darling in my eyes as a Marvel dork but this just elevated him even more. What a heartbreaking story. What an inspiring story. Not only was he heroically open with us, he infused this book with authenticity and humor in all the right parts. When he got excited, I got excited. When he was on the verge of tears, I was already bawling. That takes not just a good story, but a fantastic storyteller. I feel like I just had a nice glass of wine with a friend on the couch in my living room and spent hours laughing and crying until that last triumphant “Action!” Although he said you could skip his parents’ origin stories at the start, you shouldn’t. The payoff is indeed great. His love for them and his grandparents was so loud and beautiful and I couldn’t get enough. Bravo.
