“Whether you like it or not, you're getting better at something every day...No matter what you choose to do with your day, you are either helping to create a new habit or solidifying old ones.”

Oh Simu... Thank you for an amazing narration of your wonderful book. I had thought it might be almost all about his acting life - especially during Shang-Chi but I was dead wrong. I'm actually glad I was wrong because I saw Simu now in a different perspective. I saw how his parents persevered and really did everything they can just so their family could grow up in Canada. I saw how Simu pushed himself to be better - both as a person and also his career. It's actually inspiring to see someone who has tried his very best to make his own parents proud of him by working in a career that made him miserable. He pushed and came out of that bubble his parents provided and knew he wanted a career as an actor. I'm literally crushing Simu a lot now.

A little summary of every act:
First act - Simu did warned us about how drowsy this would be since it was about how his parents met and migrated from China to Canada. But it was an eye-opener since I learned so much more about China in the early years.
Second act - About how he grew up under his parents + college life.
Third act - His acting life

If you're here to here all about his Shang-Chi exclusives, you'll learn more if you just watch Youtubes or Google because there's only like one chapter about this.

Interesting to hear Simu’s story, and particularly his insights into the immigrant journey and importance of representation in media.

Knowing little of his story, was saddened to hear of the experiences of abuse he suffered as a child, and applaud his openness about challenging topics, which may help others seek help.

I really liked Simu's explanation of his parents' background, though it felt like he hasn't totally worked through his resentment from their abuse. It's also refreshing when an actor comes across as an attention-grabber (because we all know they all are haha).

I am a fan of Simu and enjoyed reading about his life. He was funny even though he discussed tough moments in his life. He talks about being born in China and growing up in Canada. He discusses the way Asian's are portraited in western film.

The way I loved this so much 🥹. Y’all, I am not a big nonfiction reader, but I’ve seen such great reviews about this one and it was one of my “12 books by 12 friends” recommendations. It was SO GOOD! SO GOOD! I laughed and cried and and learned so much and I just want to give Simu the biggest hug.

Everyone needs to read this book. I cannot recommend the audio enough! You could hear the emotion and passion in Simu’s voice as he talked about his childhood and career. It was literally amazing. I don’t like to rate nonfiction, but this was hands down 5 stars.

I’ve been a fan of Simu for a number of years, starting with Kim’s Convenience. I was excited to read this memoir and was left feeling somewhat disappointed.

I found his tone pretty whiny and self-involved and I didn’t have much empathy for him once he got to college. The book also felt repetitive in terms of how often he talked about how much he hated accounting as how hard he worked at being an actor and what a go-getter he was.

I think this memoir actually made me like him less, which was surprising. That’s obviously my personal opinion and ymmv. I do think that it’s important that this memoir exists and even though I wasn’t really a fan, I’m sure it will resonate with many.
