i have never been very good at reading short-story collections mostly because the short format doesn't usually do much for me. in fact, this is the second collection i have read in the year right after [b:Three Lives|161402|Three Lives|Gertrude Stein|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328867225l/161402._SY75_.jpg|61928206] by gertrude stein (which i finished yesterday). the last before that was [b:Magic for Beginners|66657|Magic for Beginners|Kelly Link|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1403188634l/66657._SY75_.jpg|649937] last year . however, i found myself quite compelled to each story in this book. point taken, there are only five and three of them involve the same protagonist--but still, it all felt like a solid read.

although delmore schwartz is more recognised as a poet than a short-story writer and the reason i will have to read him for my first ma term is his poetry, i wanted to acquaint myself with his overall writing style. however, after finishing this book i went to his wikipedia page (as you do) and read his poetry is much more philosophical than his stories (which are more autobiographical--in the sense where you don't have to know about his life to realise they must have been based on personal experiences). still, i'm very happy with myself from having picked this one up. i'm not entirely sure if there are more short-story collections by him around but i wouldn't be adverse at trying more.
