Story started off fast paced then was quite repetitive with nothing much happening that grabbed my interest. TowArds the end it made me cry so 3.5

Great book. Really fast pace, that brings out the tension. Once picked up I just couldn’t bring myself to put it down. It was gripping and emotional
This was hard to read, not because it was badly written- far from it- but because it was so sad. Awful; the depiction of abuse made me realize how romanticized this kind of thing often is.

I read this book when I was a lot younger, and now that I’ve reread it, I’ve understood it a lot more. Somehow, young me didn’t clock the racism and fatphobia that June was attacked with, which are fairly key points to the plot. The whole story becomes a lot more sad when you realise that June’s stepmother abuses her for reasons she has no control over. The loss of June’s mother was cleverly represented, it was evident that she was missed but not constantly forced into every page.
I loved the relationship between Blister and June, and how him and his family became respite for her. I would have liked to see more of this throughout the book but also understand that this aspect was not supposed to be the whole point of the story.
The ending was great. I already knew the huge twist that happens near the end so I think this was why I didn’t enjoy it as much but I was pleasantly surprised by the final page, and Blister’s note that was hidden in the back.
I would probably read this again, and would recommend it but it’s not something that I’m likely to be excited to pick up again anytime soon so it’s just under 4 stars.

I was sent this book quite a while ago, possibly in February but that might be a lie. I decided now was as good a time as any to start going through my NetGalley TBR, so I started with this one. I started the book with no idea what it was about and it immediately dragged me in. I have always been interested in books about abuse, I *love* (probably not the right word, but I can't think of a better one right now) reading books that make me sad, that make me cry. The ones that make me feel something. This book did not disappoint, I was hooked on it and read it in two sittings. I smiled, I gasped, I cried. I didn't know what to feel half the time. I was a mess by the end. That's a sign of a really good book.
