this is one of those books that i read for my english classes where i know it's good and i understand why it was revolutionary for its time/part of the literary canon today/etc. and at the same time, i have absolutely no desire to read it ever again. you know what i mean?

Going from one James to another is quite jarring, especially when it is from Patterson to Joyce.
Here James Joyce, whilst not altogether understandable, and clear has such beautiful prose and deeply developed characters that you are almost overwhelmed by the story itself, and carried along with it.
In the past I have tried Ulysses bit for various reasons never completed it, but now I am glad I have read the first book featuring Stephen Dedalus and will hopefully later this year read Ulysses. I just want a good large print version, and quite often the small print ones are very difficult to read.
