I felt like I had high hopes for this book. But there may be a lot of factors as to why I didn't enjoy it as much. The first half of this book is brilliant, the second half, however is boring. Maybe it's because I can't help think that Woolf would have written this better. She may have copied Joyce's style but she certainly made it better too. It also bugged me that I felt the book should have been titled "The Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man" and that's perhaps where I lost Stephen. The book is extremely self-centered - as Stephen becomes more of a fleshed out character- yet he has little to no empathy for everything around him. All I can conclude is Stephen believed himself dealt a bad hand, owing to which he owes no one a care to the world.
Perhaps only an artist can relate to this book. Perhaps I am no artist. Perhaps I am exactly like Dedalus, only too blind and self-centered to realize it. But I must say that this book holds little of the charm "Dubliners" does, and my inclination to read Ulysses someday has dwindled a little more.
In closing: This is the book colleges would prescribe to literature students to study and pour over - and that in itself should reveal the tedious nature of this read.

Amazing book. Inspired genuine fear in me, great prose. Quite difficult and definitely something I'll have to reread.

I struggle readkng the first half of the book. But when it started getting in to his teenage years it's actually pretty good. Joyce paints the way religious consciousness in children and teenagers really well.

LOVED the first section about Stephen Dedalus' childhood.
After that I got bored and kept tuning & out until the final conversation between Dedalus and Cranly. I'm sorry I didn't like the majority of the book, which addressed his struggle with religion, more than I did. I had the nagging notion that it was just a question of my patience at the time of reading it. Also a bit of a nag was how often I wondered if Joyce wanted me to feel this way about this particular book of his. My rating is based only on my enjoyment, and the rating itself feels a bit like sacrilege.

Joyce kan satme skrive, men forstod nok ærligt talt kun 33% af bogen. Må få den genlæst senere. kompliceret roman med flot prosa.

I am too dumb for this
