I love James Joyce, I truly do. Dubliners is a masterpiece and the Dead is the only story to ever make me cry, but this… I’d much rather have read my own obituary.

Stream of consciousness writing style with a terrifying midsection about the Catholic ideas of Hell, the story follows young Stephen as he journeys through a Catholic education in Ireland. At some points I loved this book and I thoroughly enjoyed Joyce's style but I found, oddly enough for someone as emotionally available as myself, that I just didn't really care about what happened. Perhaps that was the point but it is a shame because I'd expected to really love 'A Portrait'.
