The 2nd book in my challenge to read one book per month from my Modern Library collection.
Ever read a book & listen to the audiobook at the same time? I did on this one. It's my first time reading Joyce. Not an easy read, so having someone reading it along with me helped. I also “cheated“ and watched a couple of video reviews along the way to aid understanding (and googled stuff). Ended up liking it a lot.

The audiobook, by the way, was from Librivox - the version read by Peter Bobbe. He really did an excellent job verbalizing the text, that, at times, was hard to figure out from the words on the page. Earned the almost 5 stars the recording has. He also had a slightly different edit than what I had before me in writing, which jarred a bit each time a difference came up, but they were few enough and inconsequential enough not to matter.

I have got maybe 50 pages to go, but I am dnf-ing this book. It is much to lyrical and poetical to be interesting to me. The language ist pretty, I can see that, but everything else is lost on me. I am sure there is a lot of hidden meaning to unpack, but I am just not enjoying the book, since half the time I have no idea what is going on.
I really wanted to love this, especially after liking Ulysses so much, but I just couldn't really get into it. There were passages here and there that really caught my eye and I could tell throughout reading it that I was reading truly good writing. However, I never found myself getting super invested in Stephen's story, which is a shame because I rather liked him in Ulysses. I think maybe in a year or so I will try to read it again and see if I can get more into it.

Are you not weary of ardent ways,
Lure of the fallen seraphim?
Tell no more of enchanted days.
Your eyes have set man’s heart ablaze
And you have had your will of him.
Are you not weary of ardent ways?
Above the flame the smoke of praise
Goes up from ocean rim to rim.
Tell no more of enchanted days.
Our broken cries and mournful lays
Rise in one eucharistic hymn.
Are you not weary of ardent ways?
While sacrificing hands upraise
The chalice flowing to the brim.
Tell no more of enchanted days.
And still you hold our longing gaze
With languorous look and lavish limb!
