I really liked this book because it was so happy. It helped me smile at a time when things were sad. Goudge does an excellent job describing scenes; it feels like you are there. I want to draw the scenes they are described so well!
I gave it four stars though because it's *too* happy for me. It became too much of an unrealistic experience.
Now I very much want to read other books by Goudge.

Synopsis:
When orphaned young Maria Merryweather arrives at Moonacre Manor, she feels as if she’s entered Paradise. Her new guardian, her uncle Sir Benjamin, is kind and funny; the Manor itself feels like home right away; and every person and animal she meets is like an old friend. But there is something incredibly sad beneath all of this beauty and comfort—a tragedy that happened years ago, shadowing Moonacre Manor and the town around it—and Maria is determined to learn about it, change it, and give her own life story a happy ending. But what can one solitary girl do?
My Review
I really enjoyed this book, it was pretty amazing. I don't really read older books but i gave this a try because i loved the movie 'The secret of Moonacre' (2008). The Writing Style that Elizabeth writes is beautiful. The way everything is described is amazing, so detailed yet so brilliant. I simply adored how each Character was written. Maria the main character of 'The Little White Horse' was a stunningly written person. I also loved Robin as a Character. As i said i don't read older books as the language that is used confuses me, but the way this was written i could understand it completely, and was not confused at any point. Even though it is a Children's book i enjoyed it immensely.

The good: descriptions, especially food. Perfect World is fun to describe and read about!
The bad: pretty much everything else, including the terrible life lessons about curtailing curiosity and never quarreling.

This was a charming little story, very idyllic and sweet. It would be a great read-aloud for younger kids, and it wouldn't bore the older ones reading it. :) A little too cut and dry and predictable, but it's good for us to read children's stories now and then, it keeps us from getting unbearably old and stuffy. :D My favorite quote was "Truly, the non-curiosity of men was beyond her comprehension." So very Darbyesque.
Just felt like it dragged a lot and not much was happening. I love the film and this just wasn't matching up.

Jan. 2025-- I read through this a third time for the Children's Classics Readalong I'm hosting this year. It was a sweet story and I'd forgotten how much the conversation centers around God. I would love to have Maria's beautiful moon princess bedroom!
Oct. 2016-- I purchased a few copies of this for my kids as it's one of the books we're studying for our Victorian Sci-Fi & Fantasy class. Reading it through this second time, I didn't find it as magical as I did the first time around. I think part of that was due to the fact that I was taking notes and building a curriculum around it this time, rather than just reading for pleasure. Still, it's a lovely story and one of our family's favorites!
Oct. 2012--Excellent! This is my new favorite book! What a magical, wonderful story. I love how the author gives glory to God---both by having the children dedicate the land of the monastery back to God and also in the amazing description of the church service.
